A Christmas Carol is, of course, one of the many movie versions of Dickens' famous story. Ebenezer Scrooge, here played by George C. Scott, is a right bastard, pooh-poohing the whole notion of Christmas and any hint of charity or letting business alone, even for a day. His nephew and his faithful employee Bob Cratchit try and bring him around, but it has to be under threat of death that he finally agrees not to be such a fucker.

Scott, as usual, has a great performance as Scrooge. Nicely understated but articulate, and he brings a kind of unkind patience to the role. Instead of a loud "Bah! Humbug!", it's more, "Yes, yes, Christmas and other assorted bullshit. Could you get the hell out of my way, please?" His anti-poor rhetoric and in fact his whole misanthropic attitude is very much in line with modern conservatives, except of course that Scrooge doesn't fetishize religion.

Anyway, it's a good rendition. No Muppets, but can't have everything.
