I'm just getting warmed up.

Carrots, pork chops, spaeztle, spam, acorn squash.

Acorn squash takes forever in a lot of preparations, so I chopped it up and boiled it in stock, and then made a puree with goat's milk, salt, herbs, and some butter.

Pork chops I braised in some stock with salt, pepper, onions, ginger, small hit of chili powder.

Carrots I grilled with some salt, and in retrospect I should have used maple sugar or something, but they were good.

The spam (which isn't as horrific as I'd thought, it's actually kind of tasty) I chopped up and fried with the spaetzle.

And then, Vampire! As a reminder, here's the letter that started this story:

Dear Bartholomew,

Following the fall of 2006, Prince Martin Rossini moved to cement his power. Rivals vanished, but their childer or sires received gifts and condolences. Mortals who had grown too inquisitive became victims of "mob hits." The city became violent for a time, but far from putting the tourists off, the violence merely increased the mystique of Las Vegas. And this, in turn, brought vampires, following the mortal herds like scavenging wolves.

October 26, 2006 was the 125th anniversary of the Gunfight at the OK Corral. Following an article published in the Las Vegas Sun stating that, of late, Sin City had become "like the Old West," a businessman and Western enthusiast named Henry McCarthy (he claimed to be named for Billy the Kid, though his mother denies it) opened a casino called "Aces & Eights." It sponsored a poker tournament in honor of this dubious anniversary. Criticism that the famous gunfight had nothing to do with gambling and took place nearly 500 miles away fell on deaf ears.

The tournament began on Wednesday, October 26 amidst much hoopla an semi-authentic costumes. More than 100 people paid the entry fee. Among them: Professional gamblers, idle millionaires, a few celebrities playing for charity, several vampires, and one ill-fated spellcaster who called himself St. Peter.

On the third night of the tournament, St. Peter got to meet his namesake. And it only got worse from there...

...within a week, a half-dozen people in the tournament were dead and dismembered. One of the vampires who became intimately involved in the tournament had diablerized another, and the city had descended into blood, death and fire. But at the end of this chaos, a new sun rose. And Heath Newman had taken the next step in cementing his power.

But more on that, my friend, in my next letter.

Yours Truly,
M.

How did we get here? Read on. )

Almost didn't wind up being a Chopped dinner, since no one actually coordinated about ingredients, but three of the players wound up at my house early, one was in phone contact and the other never picks an ingredient anyway (he prefers to let someone with more experience with food do it and just contribute money). So what we wound up with was this:

Tilapia, couscous, sugar snap peas, black cherry soda, capers.

Couscous is easy; just cooked it normally with some butter. I made a batter with the soda and some flour and deep-fried the fish, boiled the peapods and then sauteed them in some bacon fat with the capers. Good stuff, simple, and then on to Vampire! )

OK, running Requiem in a couple of hours, and must leave to go pick up players. Fastnotesgo! Cut! )
innocent_man: (ptc)
Like, we're still playing tonight, but I gotta take some notes and then get back to work on this Vampire project.

Vampire and Poker! Whee! )

Gamez!

First one, then t'other.

The Show Must Go On! )

So there's that. And now this! Misspent Youth. )

Friday night, we played our first session of the third story in the Vampire chronicle set in Vegas. Previous post mentioned the change in cast (I mean, not the one directly previous, which was about food), so here we go! )
innocent_man: (carthian)
OK! Running this game in a few hours. Had some changes in personnel; one player had to drop, but I've added another. The new characters:

  • Father Morris Jensen. Lancea Sanctum enforcer, kills people that the Spear needs out of the way. Works at a night chapel hearing confession and whatnot.
  • Maria Calia, lounge singer, former thief/embezzler.
  • Christian Geist, club boy, very tall, dancer.

Rock on! )

OK, sounds good! Now, the third letter:

I've got three games coming up to run. Two of them are ongoing chronicles (that'd be Changeling and Vampire) and the other is a one-shot (Marvel Noir, which I'll get to). We're doing chargen for Misspent Youth next Saturday (for reals this time!), but there's not much prep I can do about that. Oh, and not this Monday but next, I'll run the Desolation game I was going to run last week only [livejournal.com profile] anaka wasn't up to fantasy, so we watched Enter the Dragon instead.

Right, let's kick this pig.

Oh, wait, hang on. One thing first (sorry, pig. Kick you in a second). I was thinking the other day that I really miss using this journal to, like, muse about stuff. I used to do general updates and rants and other such things, and I know for a few months it's been dinners, games and movies and that's about it.

Why, you might ask? Lack of free time (Assassin's Creed and Rock Band 3 do eat my time, as does writing, as do the kiddos)? Lack of inclination? Nah. It's because CMSD blocked LJ at work.

Now, it's not like I was spending hours on LJ when I should have been working. Actually, I used to jump on at lunch break, write a post, log back off and go to work. But they fucking blocked it, and now I go most of the day without any real Internet access (other than email), so when I get home, I've got too much else to do and I've already made whatever rants I need to make in person.

So if that's the problem, when school's out (FOR THE SUMMER! \mm/) I'll wind up posting more. Seriously, our cock-knocker governor should give me plenty of rant material.

Anyway, pig-kicking. Vampire: The third letter. )

More prep later. Right now, lunch.

So, my financial picture for summer was looking bleak. I mean, the financial picture in general ain't great, because I live in Ohio and it's a state now controlled by Republicans.

Seriously, it's getting so voting Republican is a morally indefensible position. Talk all you want about being socially liberal but fiscally conservative, but this House ain't either one. They're socially evil and fiscally evil. And the state government here ain't any better. But anyway.

The financial picture for the summer was looking bleak. I want to go to Bonnaroo with Sarah and Michelle, I want to go to Origins, and I want to go to GenCon. But all of that requires money. Not just money, but extra money - I can make my bills, but hotels are pricey.

And then yesterday, a White Wolf wanders out of the wilderness and offers me a lot of money to write some words for it.

Thanks, canis ex machina!

(Tell you more about the project later. You know, when I'm allowed to.)

Anyway, speaking of White Wolf, last night was the last session in this story of The Show Must Go On. )

Last night was Vampire! Woo!

You know, I have emo shit on my mind that I could post about, but quite frankly, I don't have the time or the inclination. One of the advantages, I guess, about going through a bout of real depression is that you can recognize the minor stuff for what it is. "Yeah, this bums me out, but I'm not, like, on the couch unable to muster the energy required to cry, so I'm still doing OK enough to make scones today."

To my Vampire players: Sorry. I owe you scones. I had planned to make them yesterday and time got away from me. I did have salsa to give you, though.

Oh, and just as a shout-out: [livejournal.com profile] docelboze and [livejournal.com profile] hot493, your characters from the first season of this chronicle make cameos. Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] hobbesthetiger, too.

More murder, more mayhem - hey, Aaron's in town! )
innocent_man: (dragolescu)
Running The Show Must Go On today after a hiatus caused by...um. Weather? Illness? Work schedules? Snow weasels? Don't recall. Anyway. )
innocent_man: (dragolescu)
I say "perhaps" because I want to do the write-up for the Vampire game. Normally I'd do it tomorrow at work between sessions, but y'know, they're blocking LJ now, dammitall.

Anyway, if I finish the write-up in enough time, I'll do a Ganakagok character. And at some point this week, I'll want to do a post about the recently-released Vampire Translation Guide, and why I found it such a weird project.

In which someone buys the farm. Or eats the farmer. )

Sure, I got time.

The Game: Ganakagok
The Publisher: Consensus Games
Degree of Familiarity: I just ran it, in fact.
Books Required: Just the one, plus a deck of cards.

Forever have the People lived in Starlit cold... )
innocent_man: (carthian)
Running Vampire in a few hours. Need some notes. So here we are. Here is the player protection. )
innocent_man: (mouseketeer)
Yesterday was the most recent installment of our Vampire chronicle. Since I have a little time, I shall do the write-up.

Ever see Near Dark? )
innocent_man: (carthian)
Oh, y'know. And holy shit, is that a weird video.

Anyway, yesterday we played us some Vampire, sans Adele, whose player was eaten by zebras or something.

My makeup may be flaking, but my smile still stays on. )
